The Washington Volvo Club was founded in 1975 by a small group of Volvo Enthusiasts. From those twenty charter members, we have grown to an organization with many members all over the world.

Our membership ranks grew rapidly in the late '70's due largely to one event. In 1978, we had grown to such a point that we were chosen by (then) Volvo of America and its advertising agency to be the subject of a TV commercial and magazine ad called "Happiness Loves Company". Since that time, our relationship with Volvo Cars of North America and with AB Volvo has been very cordial.

Some of the major benefits of membership in the Washington Volvo Club include:

Volvamus, the WVC newsletter, is published monthly except December and January. It contains articles of interest, current club news, upcoming events, technical information, and classified ads.

Parts Discounts: Every car (yes, even a Volvo) needs periodic maintenance and the replacement of worn parts. Your WVC membership entitles you to up to a 20% over-the-counter discount at most dealers in the Washington metropolitan area. Your club membership will pay for itself in parts discounts alone!

National Meet: WVC sponsors an annual Volvo meet featuring technical sessions, rally, gymkhana, swap meet, picnic, banquet, and other events culminating in an awards ceremony. The annual meet is the highlight of WVC's annual activities.

Firande: Firande is Swedish for celebration, and celebrate we do, at our big winter event. Each January, a country inn within a few hours driving time from Washington is selected for our most formal event of the year. Good food, door prizes, and best of all, the camaraderie of all attending make this a most popular club event.

Regular Club Meetings: On the fourth Tuesday evening of each month (excluding December and January) the club holds its regular meeting. Program topics have included an automotive writer, a Maryland state trooper, films on road rallies, and various technical presentations. The meetings also provide an open forum for members to discuss car-related problems and share their expertise. The meeting place changes from time to time when special programs require it, but we usually meet at the Martens Volvo Service Center at 5206 River Road. Technical Sessions: Periodically, a Washington area Volvo Dealership opens up its service bays on a Saturday morning for WVC members to work on their cars. Parts may be purchased (at member discount) from the parts department. This is a rare opportunity for members to make repairs or do maintenance work on their cars under ideal conditions, with experts available to give advice.

Other Activities: During the course of the year, WVC members participate in many interesting activities. These have included sponsoring a professional rally drive in a benefit rally; a tour of the Meredyth Vineyards in Middleburg, Virginia; a day at the Bealeton, Virginia Air Show; and various competitive events at Summit Point Raceway.
